I’m David Wunderink, the woodworker behind Hawk & Handsaw.
I’ve been creating sawdust for a couple decades now, in all manner of ways: framing and finishing for building contractors in Baltimore, building custom furniture in the Hudson Valley, restoring historic homes in Massachusetts and Michigan (including my own), processing local trees for lumber or firewood, and crafting new products in my woodshop here in Grand Rapids, MI.
Everything about the process of making is fulfilling to me, like using old tools and techniques or building mock-ups to problem solve. I love using local trees, knowing exactly where my lumber comes from. I love the sound that a sharpened drawknife makes against long grain, and the feel of huge curls coming off of a green log on my lathe, and the different smells that different species make when cut: cherry and sassafras and red cedar and butternut… though perhaps not sycamore or red oak. And I’ll always enjoy talking about woodworking— so please do contact me here or through email, or comment on my Instagram posts, or come chat at a local market.
I design my products to be useful and beautiful, whether it’s a patterned cutting board or a toy sword, and always use solid wood, traditional joinery, and natural finishes.
